Create line-item invoices with tax calculation and formatted preview
An invoice calculator helps freelancers, small businesses and contractors quickly compute subtotals, taxes, discounts and totals for client invoices. Rather than doing the arithmetic manually — and risking errors that delay payment or damage trust — you enter your line items, tax rate and any discount, and the tool produces the final amount due along with the breakdown your client needs.
Professional invoices require more than just a total: itemised line items, tax amounts shown separately (required in most jurisdictions for VAT/GST compliance), and clear payment terms help clients process invoices faster and reduce disputes. This calculator handles multi-item invoices with per-item quantities and prices, a single tax rate, and optional flat or percentage discounts.
In most tax systems, discounts reduce the taxable base — so apply the discount first, then calculate tax on the discounted subtotal. Some jurisdictions differ; check local tax rules if in doubt.
Divide the inclusive price by (1 + tax rate). For 20% VAT: price ÷ 1.20. The result is the net; subtracting it from the inclusive price gives the tax amount.
Tax-exclusive (net) prices show the amount before tax; tax is added on top. Tax-inclusive (gross) prices already include tax; the tax portion must be extracted. B2B invoices typically use net pricing; B2C retail often uses inclusive.
In most countries with VAT or GST, yes — registered businesses must show the tax amount separately and include their tax identification number. Requirements vary by country and registration threshold; consult a local accountant.
